Understanding Nameserver Configuration: A Complete Guide for Beginners (2025)

When it comes to launching a website, most people opt for a domain and web hosting. However, there is a technical step that most people ignore or are confused about. It is known as the nameserver configuration. By the end of this article, you will get to know the following:

  • What are nameservers?

  • Why Does It Matter?

  • How to correctly configure it?

  • What should be done when things go bad?

Let's understand it all one by one.

Defining Nameserver: What is It?

Nameserver is like a director for a domain name. It tells the internet where to look for a website. If you put it in a domain such as yourstore. pk, the nameserver tells the browser about which hosting has the website files.

It is a part of a domain name system (DNS) - a system which connects human-readable web urls to the machine-readable IPs for example google.com to 216.58.211.46.

How does it work?

Without correct nameserver configuration, your domain won't know where to find your website files, and your site will show errors or stay offline.

What happens when a user visits a website:

  • Browser contacts the domain nameservers

  • Nameservers check for your hosting server’s IP address

  • The website is loaded from that server.

What are the Default NameServers?

But if you're using a different hosting provider (e.g., ServerSea.pk), you’ll need to update the nameservers of your domain to connect it to the correct hosting.

For example, when you buy a domain from a registrar such as GoDaddy, Namecheap and ServerSea.pk, it comes with default nameservers - pointing to the registrar’s hosting.

Configuring Nameservers (Step-by-Step)

Here is how to configure a property for NameServers:

Step 1: Hosting Provider's Nameservers

When you buy a hosting plan from ServerSea.pk you will get email or dashboard information such as

ns1.serversea.com or ns2.serversea.com

These are the new nameservers.

Step 2: Check Your Domain Registrar

Goto your website for purchasing your domain name such as GoDaddy, ServerSea.pk and Namecheap.

Step 3: Locate DNS or Nameserver Settings

  • Check domain management

  • Look for options such as Edit Nameservers and Manage DNS

  • You will see Primary Nameservers and Secondary Nameservers.

Step 4: Replace Your Hosting’s Nameservers

Delete the default set nameserver values and enter the ones shared by your hosting provider. For example:

NameServer 1 ns1.serversea.com

NameServer2 ns2.serversea.com

Click Save/Update and Apply it.

Step 5: Wait for DNS Propagation

DNS propagation will take time anywhere from 1 to 24 hours and sometimes up to 48 hours for the changes to take place. This is known as the DNS propagation. In this time:

Your site goes up and down temporarily

You will see a coming soon and DNS not found page

However, this is normal.

Checking if Nameservers Are Working

You can use tools such as dnschecker.org and whatsmydns.net to verify the DNS pointing to the website. If you can see the hosting provider’s nameservers then the update has worked properly.

Professional Tips

  • Copy NameServers exactly - don’t make a typing mistake

  • Keep an original DNS record before making changes

  • Ask your hosting provider to assist if you are unsure

  • When using a Cloudflare, update your nameserver settings at the domain registrar with Cloudflare-provided values.

Nameservers Vs. DNS Records – What’s the Difference?

Nameservers are like a directory. They tell the servers where to look for the site.

DNS Records are the inside instructions such as A record, MX record and CNAME etc.

Once the nameservers are set, you can easily manage the DNS records inside a hosting control panel.

Wrapping Up

Nameserver configuration sounds technical but it's quite simple once you know the basics.

It is one of the most important steps in getting a site live and functional

Without the correct nameservers, your domain is only a name and doesn't know where to redirect.

Take your time and configure your nameservers properly, and if you are in doubt, ask your hosting team.
